About UUIDs
A UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) is a 128-bit value used to identify records, sessions and objects without a central authority handing out IDs. v4 UUIDs are fully random, while v7 UUIDs embed a timestamp so they sort chronologically — useful as database primary keys. Everything here is generated locally with the Web Crypto API; nothing is sent to a server.
Can two generated UUIDs ever collide?
Practically no. With 122 random bits in a v4 UUID, the odds of a collision are negligible even across billions of IDs.
Which version should I use?
Use v4 for general-purpose unique IDs. Use v7 if you want IDs that also sort by creation time, such as database keys or log entries.
