Paste or type any text and listen to it read aloud. The tool detects the language automatically, picks a matching voice, and highlights each word as it's spoken.
While reading aloud, your text switches to a read-only view so the word currently being spoken can be highlighted.
Keyboard shortcuts: press Space to play/pause and Esc to stop (works anywhere outside the text box).
When enabled, the tool guesses the language of your text and automatically switches to a matching voice before reading. Turn it off to always use the voice you pick above.
Rate controls how fast the voice speaks, pitch controls how high or low it sounds, and these can be changed even while audio is playing.
About this text to speech tool
This tool uses your browser's built-in speech engine to read text aloud, so nothing you type ever leaves your device or gets uploaded to a server. It works entirely offline once the page has loaded, in any modern browser that supports the Web Speech API.
Word highlighting
As the text is read, the word currently being spoken is highlighted in real time, which makes this useful for proofreading, language learning, or following along with long documents.
Automatic language detection
When "Auto-detect language & voice" is on, the tool looks at your text and picks a matching installed voice automatically. It recognizes scripts like Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic, Devanagari, Chinese, Japanese and Korean, and uses common word patterns to tell apart languages that share the Latin alphabet, such as English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Dutch.
Long text support
Very long passages are automatically split into smaller chunks at natural sentence breaks before being queued for playback. This avoids the sudden cutoffs that some browsers produce when a single utterance runs too long, so pasting in an article or full page of text still plays smoothly from start to finish.
Available voices
The voices you can choose from come from your operating system and browser rather than from this website, so the list will differ between devices. Browsers such as Chrome and Edge on desktop generally offer the widest range of languages and voices.
