Tips for the best results
- Use WebP or JPEG for photos and screenshots. PNG is a lossless format, so the quality slider has little to no effect on PNG output. If you need a smaller file, switch the output format to WebP or JPEG.
- Lower the width for very large images. Reducing the pixel dimensions usually shrinks the file far more than lowering quality alone, especially for detailed photos or high-resolution screenshots.
- Very detailed images compress less. Busy, high-detail images (like text-heavy screenshots) don't shrink as much as simple photos at the same quality setting — this is a property of image compression in general, not a bug.
- File size limit. To keep things fast and reliable in your browser, this tool supports images up to 25MB.
Frequently asked questions
Why didn't my PNG get smaller?
PNG uses lossless compression, so the quality slider doesn't apply to it. To get a meaningfully smaller file, switch the output format to WebP or JPEG.
Why is the compressed file still fairly large?
Highly detailed images (busy photos, dense screenshots with lots of text) naturally compress less than simple images at the same quality level. Try lowering the quality further or reducing the width.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. All compression happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your images are never sent to a server.
