About this .gitignore generator

A .gitignore file tells Git which files and folders to leave out of your repository — dependency folders, build output, editor settings, secrets in .env. This tool builds one from curated, deduplicated templates for the languages, frameworks, editors and OSes you pick, entirely in your browser.

Pick your stack

Select any mix of languages, frameworks, editors and OSes — rules combine and duplicates are dropped automatically.

Merge an existing file

Paste a .gitignore you already have and it's kept as-is, with only genuinely new rules added.

Copy or download

Edit the preview directly if needed, then copy it or download it ready to drop into your project root.

Is anything I select or paste sent to a server?

No. The file is generated locally in your browser — nothing is uploaded or stored.

Where should I put the generated file?

Save it as .gitignore in the root of your Git repository, alongside folders like .git.

Will this un-track files that are already committed?

No. .gitignore only affects untracked files going forward — remove already-tracked files with git rm --cached.
