For commercial product identification, use an officially assigned barcode number from the relevant GS1 organisation.

About this barcode generator

A barcode packs a number or short string of text into a pattern of lines (or a grid, for 2D formats) that a scanner or phone camera can read back instantly. This tool draws that pattern directly in your browser, so you can generate as many barcodes as you need — for inventory sheets, price tags, asset labels or a quick test — without an account, a watermark, or anything being sent to a server.

Which format should you use?

CODE 128 Encodes any letters, numbers and symbols. The safest default when you're not tied to a retail standard.
EAN-13 / EAN-8 Standard retail barcodes used outside North America. EAN-13 needs a 12 or 13-digit number; EAN-8 is for small packaging.
UPC-A / UPC-E The North American equivalent of EAN. UPC-E is a compressed 6-digit version for smaller labels.
CODE 39 An older alphanumeric format still common in industrial, automotive and internal inventory systems.
ITF / ITF-14 Interleaved 2-of-5 formats built for numeric data. ITF-14 is the standard for cartons and shipping cases.
MSI A numeric format mainly used for shelf labels and stock control in warehouses.
Codabar Common in libraries, blood banks and some healthcare systems for numeric IDs.

Getting a barcode that scans reliably

  • Check the digit count and character type required by your chosen format — EAN, UPC and ITF formats only accept numbers, and reject values of the wrong length.
  • Keep the bar color dark and the background light; low contrast is the most common cause of failed scans.
  • Don't shrink a barcode below the point where the thinnest bar is still clearly separated from its neighbors — increase the bar width if scans start failing at a smaller size.
  • Leave a blank margin around the barcode; scanners use it to know where the pattern starts and ends.
  • For printed labels, export as SVG so the barcode stays crisp at any print size.

Frequently asked questions

Are these official, purchasable barcode numbers?

No. This tool turns any value you type into a barcode image — it doesn't issue or register GTINs, UPCs or EANs. To sell a product through retailers, you need a number officially assigned by GS1 or a similar body.

Why does EAN-13 or UPC-A reject my input?

These formats are strictly numeric and fixed-length, and the last digit is a checksum. If your value has the wrong number of digits or a letter in it, the barcode can't be generated — try CODE 128 instead if you need flexible, non-numeric text.

What's the difference between PNG and SVG downloads?

PNG is a fixed-resolution image, good for screens and documents at their current size. SVG is a vector format that stays perfectly sharp when resized or printed larger, which makes it the better choice for labels and packaging.

Is there a limit on how many barcodes I can generate?

Bulk mode supports up to 100 values per batch, generated one per line. Single mode has no limit on how many times you can generate a barcode.

Is any of my data uploaded or stored?

No. Every barcode is rendered locally in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved anywhere.
